Habey USA’s 12-inch panel PC brings that rugged look to your home
July 24, 2011 by publisher · Leave a Comment
It’s a shame this steel-encased touchscreen PC from Habey USA arrived too late for our violent outburst on the Engadget Show, but at least it has some broadly agreeable specs. The PPC-6512 can reel off 1080p vids on its 12-inch screen while consuming just 30W thanks to its 1.8GHz Atom D525 and NVIDIA Ion GT218 combo. An empty 2.5-inch removable HDD tray and eSATA port give it potential as a networked storage hub, and an old-school serial port lets it handle home automation controls too. It could also be used as a comms or security terminal, as there’s a 1.3MP webcam on board, vesa mounting holes and four USB 2.0 ports. Heck, we’d buy three and rig our whole house up — were it not for the $800 price tag, the apparently limited availability on Habey USA’s underloved Amazon page, and the fact that we like our terminals to show a bit of emotion . Full specs in the PR after the break.

142 electric vehicle charging stations head to Massachusetts, Nantucket and MV not included
July 24, 2011 by publisher · Leave a Comment
Things are lookin’ up in New England — particularly for those who crisscross Yawkey Way with an electric vehicle. A grand total of 142 EV charging stations are slated to hit The Bay State in the coming months, with 25 communities across the commonwealth to get gifted. Boston reports that the majority of ‘em will be in “common commuter or traveler spots,” places like downtown parking garages, MBTA lots, shopping malls, etc. The bulk of the boxes will be part of the ChargePoint network, and we’re told that the rates for recharging will be set by “municipalities on public land and by property owners on private land,” depending on where each box is planted. So, is the charging station rollout between NY and MA the new Yankees vs. Red Sox? Nah, but a techie can dream. 142 electric vehicle charging stations head to Massachusetts, Nantucket and MV not included originally appeared on Engadget on Sun, 24 Jul 2011 10:28:00 EDT.

Apple expands iOS and Mac App Store into 33 new territories, Tuvalu strangely absent
July 23, 2011 by publisher · Leave a Comment
Brought that shiny new unlocked iPhone 4 home to Tanzania, only have your first App Store experience end in tears? We certainly sympathize, and apparently Apple’s heard your plea. Interested developers can now head on over to the iTunes Connect portal, where they’ll tick some new checkboxes and soon be on their way, peddling their wares to an additional 33 locales — but not the home of .tv, unfortunately. Curious if your nation made the cut? Hop on past the break and see if Cupertino thinks you’re worthy. Space Shuttle Atlantis touches down in Florida, won’t be going back up again
July 21, 2011 by admin · Leave a Comment
You already know how we feel about the Space Shuttle program coming to a close, but of course that was just a little premature. Now it’s all done except for the mothballing, with the Atlantis touching down successfully at runway 15 at Kennedy Space Center. Crewmembers Chris Ferguson, Doug Hurley, Sandy Magnus, and Rex Walheim are back on our planet and, traveling at speeds decidedly slower than escape velocity, can officially put a cap onto this historic series of space missions that we, at least, will never forget. In the words of NASA: “Job well done, America.” Space Shuttle Atlantis touches down in Florida, won’t be going back up again originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 21 Jul 2011 06:00:00 EDT. Rogers listens, bumps data caps, lets you stream a few extra Netflix movies a month
July 21, 2011 by publisher · Leave a Comment
Rogers hasn’t exactly made a lot of fans with the rather draconian caps on its cable modem service. But the company wants you to know, it has heard your complaints and doesn’t want to cut you off from your precious, bandwidth-intensive Netflix streams. That’s why it’s raising the limits on its three top tier plans later this month. Extreme subscribers are getting a bump from 80GB to 100GB, Extreme Plus users from 125GB to 150GB, and Ultimate customers from 175GB to 250GB. The company is even boosting speeds, you know, to help you make more efficient use of that newly raised data ceiling — from 15Mbps to 24Mbps for the Extreme and 25Mbps to 32Mbps for Extreme Plus. It’s always nice to see a company listen to its customers, and come on, data caps aren’t all that bad. University of Birmingham researchers develop antibacterial stainless steel, mysophobes clap from within their bubbles
July 19, 2011 by admin · Leave a Comment
Answering the call of germphobes and their Stepford ladies-in-waiting everywhere, researchers at the University of Birmingham have devised a silver-infused technique of warding off unwanted bacteria. Eschewing the previously attempted, but short-lived coating method, these scientists have “developed a novel surface alloying technology” that infuses silver, nitrogen and carbon into a newly germ-resistant stainless steel surface. The team hopes this super durable steel will soon find its anti-bacterial way into hospitals and the surgical implements they employ — not to mention your college cafeteria. Modern Lady Macbeth homemaker types can breathe a sigh of “Out, damn’d superbug spot” relief and get back to sealing up the furniture. Microsoft Explorer Touch Mouse coming in September for $49.95
July 19, 2011 by publisher · Leave a Comment
It’s already been rather unceremoniously leaked , but now the Microsoft Explorer Touch Mouse is all sorts official. Granted, it’s kinda tough to get excited about a mouse, but Redmond’s latest pointer is actually pretty neat. It sports BlueTrack Technology for getting your double click on while using your jeans or carpet as a mouse pad, and a haptic scroll strip that lets you feel the speed at which you’re flicking through the web. Oh, and that strip lets you scroll both horizontally and vertically — not bad for $49.95. Microsoft even claims it can last 18-months on a single set of batteries, just long enough to forget this wireless mouse even has a set of DC cells inside. Check out the extraordinarily brief PR after the break and keep those purchasing fingers holstered for now — this bad boy wont be hitting shelves till September. Want to write for Engadget? We’re hiring in Tokyo, Japan!
July 18, 2011 by publisher · Leave a Comment
Oh sure, you love gadgets — but do you have the chops to write about them? We’d love to know if you think you do, because we’re looking to actually pay humans to do this stuff. Professional writing experience isn’t necessary (though folks with it will get first consideration), but what we really care about is that you can write skillfully about gadgets with wit, concision, and authority. And being obsessed with Engadget is good, too. So here’s what we’re after: Tokyo, Japan-based editor: Full-time, based in Tokyo (or nearby), able to work from home and quickly commute to the city for events, meetings, etc. English must be your first language, as that’s what you’ll be writing for us in. Speaking Japanese isn’t a requirement, but it doesn’t hurt. To clarify, this is an Engadget US position, but based in Tokyo.

Roku 2 launch could be just around the corner
July 18, 2011 by publisher · Leave a Comment
If the Roku 2 hardware spied passing through the FCC and lounging around a few beta tester’s pads piqued your interest we have good news, it may be about to launch very soon. So far all we know is what we’ve seen of the shrunken cases and revamped IT remote, while upgraded processors within are bringing Angry Birds this summer. In the meantime, Zatz Not Funny has strung together an FCC filing for the new RF remote control and rumors indicating an impending launch at prices identical to current models. That puts the XD at $80 and the XS at $100, so if you were thinking about stopping off at Best Buy for a media streamer, you might want to hold off for a day or three.
