July 31, 2011 by · Leave a Comment

We know you’ve got questions, and if you’re brave enough to ask the world for answers, here’s the outlet to do so. This week’s Ask Engadget inquiry is coming to us from Alejandro, who’s looking to cash in on the sudden glut of absolutely respectable prepaid smartphones. If you’re looking to send in an inquiry of your own, drop us a line at ask [at] engadget [dawt] com . “I’m looking to grab a new phone using a prepaid service. What’s the best prepaid phone service in terms of overall price, phone selection and other bells / whistles. Thanks!” We’re guessing he’s looking for a smartphone here, so before you yell “Cricket!” and run for the hills, give a bit of consideration to folks like Virgin Mobile and Boost Mobile, amongst others.

Orange Switzerland is expecting Nokia’s N9 on September 15th

July 31, 2011 by · Leave a Comment

Release date info for Nokia’s sweet slab of Meego has been scarce, but now Orange Switzerland’s webpage announces the N9 is coming its way September 15th. Last month Swedish carrier 3 Group promised it would arrive there September 23rd , while some retailer in Kazakhstan is apparently listing them for sale August 19th. We’re not quite ready to whip out our passport and translator for a taste of the ( not ) zombie OS’s brains yet, but we’ll keep an eye out for any more release date information as it comes. British judge doesn’t like the cut of Newzbin 2′s jib, orders BT to block it

July 29, 2011 by · Leave a Comment

Shiver-me-timbers, it looks like the movie studios’ latest legal broadside just scored a direct hit against the big bad pirate ship. A UK judge has ordered telecoms giant BT to block its subscribers from visiting Newzbin 2, a site which aggregates Usenet downloads, on the simple basis that BT knows some of its customers are using the the site to breach copyright law and therefore has a duty to stop them. This counts as an unprecedented victory for the Motion Picture Association, who brought the case, and it potentially arms them with a new weapon to force ISPs to block other sites in future. Could that be Newzbin 3 we spy on the horizon? British judge doesn’t like the cut of Newzbin 2′s jib, orders BT to block it originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 29 Jul 2011 08:01:00 EDT. Google’s Music Beta gives users two invites, keys to the cloud for their best mates

July 29, 2011 by · Leave a Comment

We probably all know at least one person who is bummed they missed out on the initial round of invites for Music Beta by Google . Well friends, you can be the bearer of good news for those troubled souls (who haven’t moved on to other online music pursuits, of course), as we discovered through a fellow music enthusiast. Members of the cloud-based service are now the proud owners of two invites handed down from the Goog, to be passed out only through a thorough application and interview process. Ok, not really… but perhaps you do have the power to make two of your friends, or soon-to-be friends, pretty happy. That is, until they realize how long it will take them to upload that music library they’ve been curating since 8th grade. Hey Vonage customers, your VoIP service of choice is about to get a bit of a mobile value-add. Announced today, the company’s new Extensions service links your existing home internet calling plan to extra phone numbers — like a cellphone– for free, so you can make that long-distance call to Tante Lulu in Gstaad on-the-go. Okay, so the feature isn’t exactly gratis — you’re still required to sign up for an unlimited international calling plan , but the bucks literally stop there. All it takes to get started with this “virtual calling card” is an access number and some foreign digits. Sound too complicated for you? Don’t fret, official iPhone and Android-compatible apps are scheduled to hit their respective markets in the coming weeks. So, go ahead and ring ol’ Lu for her 89th birthday.

Focusing on the extraterrestrial all day can probably make it pretty easy to forget about all that’s going on here on Earth. NASA has shifted its focus a bit for its new iPad app, taking a look at the goings-on of the world around us. The app features videos, stories, and images explaining things like climate change and plant life from the vantage point of the organization’s satellites. Like the self-titled NASA iPad app before it , the Visualization Explorer is available now as a free download from iTunes. Verizon’s Blackberry Bold 9930 unveiled early thanks to website blunder

Oh boy, we don’t envy the Verizon web admin who made this particular mis-click. If you go to VZW’s sales page for the Blackberry 9650 and click on the “Explore Features” video, you get an unexpected treat: a walkthrough not of the 9650, but of the unreleased Bold 9930 . The specs are familiar, like the 1.2GHz processor, 2.8-inch touchscreen and Blackberry 7 OS. But at least we now have it from the horse’s mouth that the new Bold Touch is indeed coming to Verizon. We’ve stuck our own rip of the video after the break, as the original will likely disappear any second — much like that poor web admin.
